About

FRITZ SOUTHDOWNS

What happens when a couple meets and they have 9 generations of combined experience of ranching and raising sheep? What if you add 3 children to that equation that are competing in the Major Livestock show circuit, and you are having trouble coming up with enough competitive lambs? What would your next step be? Well in our situation the answer was easy! So in 1998, we made that dream a reality when we purchased the ranch, bought a starter herd of ewes, moved to the country, and Fritz Southdowns was established!

Our children, Karin, Kody and Katie were very instrumental in getting our operation off the ground. Not only were they involved in the day to day operations but they were also our toughest competitors. That first year we lambed out about 80 ewes. As with any new business there were a few ups and downs. With no production records on the ewes purchased it took a little trial and error and a lot of hard work, to slowly see improvement in the flock. Our success was first celebrated in 2001 when we bannered at the Southwest International Livestock Show in El Paso, San Antonio Market Show, as well as the Breeding Show, Star of Texas and at the State Fair of Texas. Once those banners started rolling in it became our drive to continue raising and producing competitive southdowns. Since then Fritz Southdowns has continued to breed Champion and Reserve Champion Banners at all the major shows in Texas multiple times in both the market as well as the breeding shows. We are even fortunate enough to have earned many out of state winners over the years too.

As times have changed our focus continues to be about the children and their families. We continue to strive to put feeders in the winner's circle. We are not only here to sell you your next market lamb or breeding sheep, but to assist you in any way we can. Susan has established her own small ruminant veterinary clinic at the house and is available around the clock to help with medical advice or attention as needed. We understand the importance and value of your project and know how much time and effort it requires. Other areas we will assist you with include feeding, exercise program, show prep, or we are readily available to just talk sheep.

Now that we are starting to have grandkids we are even more dedicated to staying progressive and keeping our lambs competitive. We deeply feel that our feeders are a part of our extended family and welcome you to join our team. If you are looking for a breeder that has your best interest at heart then look no further, Fritz Southdowns is here to help you achieve your goals. Please feel free to give us a call at anytime.
